Technology Takeover: Helping Us Work from Home or Taking Over Our Lives?

Many people start a work-from-home business to have better balance between work and their personal life. And technology has made it more possible to do just that. Communication tools connect people remotely, regardless of their locations and has helped fuel the work-from-home trend. But technology also has a downside. The same technology that makes working from home possible is also a culprit to blame for poor work-life balance because it gives people constant connectivity. They “are always on”, finding it tough to truly leave work behind.

In fact, research indicates technology can erode the ability to achieve true work/life balance. Consider these stats:

• According to an Accenture survey, 70% of workers said technology caused work to creep into their personal lives.

• Nearly half of employees (45 percent) say they don’t have enough time in the week for personal activities, and

• One-fifth spend more than 20 hours a week working outside the office during their personal time, according to a WorkplaceTrends.com survey
